Cutting and buffingJuly 2019- The inner fenders fit great, much better than using Chevelle parts. Moving to the rear I started cutting the deck lid getting rid of the orange peel and any dirt that got in the paint. Progressively finer and finer sandpaper I wet sand until the previous sand marks are gone. I end up with 5000 grit and then proceed to buffing. In the picture on the right you can see the obvious difference between the side wet sanded with 5000 and the half that I have began buffing. After a lot of work it turns into a mirror! I use the same procedure on the front fenders. It's really worth all the elbow grease. New paint seals are used on all the parts being installed against the new paint. It's really great to see things finally coming together. I cleaned and repainted the black accents in the trim, they are bolted on with new clips and hardware. New wheel opening trim is put on also, it's looking awesome!
Repeat on the drivers side. I'm really happy with this! Now for these HUGE quarter panels, this will take a very long time. Just like magic! The new quarters do not have the holes for the lower trim. I needed to take a lot of measurements from the old panel and transfer them to the new quarter. Turned out absolutely perfect. I installed the screw in pins that hold the clips for the vinyl top trim. It's important to use a little sealer on these to prevent water leaks and rust. I temporarily installed the trim and transferred its location to tape I put on the car. This will allow me to see where more holes need to be drilled for more trim pins. Lots of holes in nice fresh paint! Now to the other side. She's really coming together!
