Body paint and assembly

July 2019-July 2020

Time lapse of applying sealer, color and clear to the body.

I couldn't be happier, it's so shiny!

All the hard preparation really show how it pays off now.

Here you can see the seam sealer from the trunk drops to the lower part of the quarter panel.

I used a good quality rubberized undercoating to heavily cover this area and all the way to the front of the trunk drop.

No matter what body color the Montes and Chevelles all rocker panels were painted semi gloss black from the factory.  Here I masked off the quarter and applied the proper black..

I still need to do this on the front fenders.

I moved to the trunk opening and began with the brand new trunk weatherstrip.  The lower left picture shows the correct orientation of the seal, it can be confusing if you haven't done this before or taken note of it before removing it.

Because I had pre-fit the trunk deck lid, it went right back into place.  A small amount of adjustment was needed to get it acceptable.

If you've never adjusted the height of the front part of the deck lid, it can be raised by placing shims under the most forward hinge bolt.  The lid can be lowered by placing shims between the hinge and lid on the rear hinge bolt.

It's much easier to cut and buff the doors on stands than when it's on the car.  The results are just amazing, they turn into mirrors because of all the prep work.  Just gorgeous!

I used a couple layers of masking tape to protect all the edges while re-installing the drivers door.

It would be a shame to chip any paint at this point.

I prepared the body by putting protective tape in the door jam and used two stacks of two mixing sticks on the rocker opening.

This will not only protect the paint but also give nearly the perfect height from previous experience.

The door is set in place and the hinges are snugged.  Slowly the door is adjusted to perfection.

The quarter panels were installed and adjusted with the doors still on the body, this would guarantee they would fit when everything was finished.

Also I wanted to note that all the hinges were rebuilt before being reused.

And the same on the passenger side.

Doors are always adjusted from the rear (door to quarter panel) forward to the fenders.

The passenger inner fender came out in pieces.  It's further evidence of a collision on the passenger side.

In the past I've used Chevelle inner fenders, they don't really fit and take some modifications to work.

I decided to try The Parts Place liners and I was very pleased with the way they looked and ultimately fit.

Highly recomend.

The factory mounted the A arm seal to the liner with staples.  I use a pneumatic stapler to attach the new seals in a similar way.

The staples are bent over from behind.  Works great.

Next we'll get some more things shiny and assembled
